I got my son an Amp build kit last Christmas. I thought it would be fun and teach him some basic mechanics. My last build was a Futaba FX-10 many many years ago. We had so much fun with it, that I decided to get one for myself. I built mine with the Kinexis 4000 KV and metal gear set originally. We raced all Summer at our local track. I converted it to a K5 Blazer and went through endless mods trying to get it to perform the way it should.
After a full year with it and totally being hooked on racing now, I’m still attached to where I started. I now race a tekno 4x4 sct, M-05 indoors, and still pushing the Amp for racing performance. I’ve made it go 50+mph, broken just about every part, tried every spring and oil combo, put 4600 kv motors in it, tried a multitude of tires etc. Today the amp placed 1rst in the main. It wasn’t because of a big motor. It was a 13.5 T motor with a 26t pinion, stock rear shocks with 30w oil and stock front shocks with green associated springs, 35w oil, and 6mm spacers in the shocks to decrease droop so the front A arms rode flat. I ran proline Caliber buggy tires mounted to amp rims. The smaller motor provided so much better throttle control than any of the massive motors I’ve been running and it doesn’t stress the drivetrain near as much. I kept bumping up the pinion until I could clear the double. I guess my point is, in racing, you are only as fast as you can control it around a corner. Smaller motors give you way more control and will definitely make your truck last longer. Lastly, the amp can be very competitive against much higher priced machines. You just have to do your homework and find what combination works for you. My disease restarted with the Amp and it has taught me a ton in the last year.

Great post! I totally agree with you-- I feel that I learned far more by starting with the Boost (and later my AMP MT/Circuit) and tweaking those cars to make them perform than if I had started with a real race kit. I love my TLR 22 cars but owe most of what I've learned to the Boost and AMP.

awesome. where did you get the body? it looks stunning
It’s a j concepts I got with a used circuit. It came painted purple which I couldn’t stand. I liquid masked the windows, grill, and head and tail lights and sprayed it with a black lexan gloss paint and then top coated with 2 coats of flat black. I dig it now, and it will bleed purple with time
