2wd Torment shock spring help

Hi All,

I have upgraded to brushless. With the slightly heavier motor, bigger ESC, metal drive shafts and metal gear set, I found the current rear springs not to be adequate to handle the increased rear weight. I would like to keep the stock shocks, but replace the springs. What spring set will you guys recommend. Will probably buy from ebay. The Team Associate spring set has been discontinued.

Yes, single rate springs should be the better easier option. What do you guys recommend I get? I don't know what brand will fit the stock ECX shocks. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

What color are your current springs, I am assuming black? Which I believe are mediums?
ECX does have red (softer), and Blue (stiffer). I did find a set of silver springs too, not sure what they were for or the spring rate.
Other than that grab a pair of calipers measure the ID of the spring, and length and go shopping. They most likely don't have to be exact size, close should work. Testing purposes only......(y)

I've been down this path. Finding springs to fit the ECX shocks is difficult as most springs DO NOT come with any measurements for inside/outside diameter. Such a hassle.

The plastic and aluminum ECX shocks are basically the same, but the threaded adjustment collars on the aluminum models will accomodate a slightly larger diameter spring.

ECX doesn't really offer different rate springs any more-- they used to sell red (soft) and blue (hard). You might be able to find these on Ebay.

I found that the stock ECX springs had an inner diameter of 14mm. "Old" Associate springs (pre-big-bore) were a bit of a snug fit on the aluminum shocks and tended to hang on the threads.

I'd recommend against buying the Traxxas aluminum-bodied Big Bore shocks (note: they aren't really big-bore compared to other brands' big bore shocks). The shaft seals are difficult to service as they're held in place with a spring clip. While their action is smooth and the seals are good, it's the relatively difficult serviceability that turned me off.

Ultimately I found that the ECX aluminum shocks are actually quite good for the money. As far as springs go, I discovered that old Losi springs fit pretty well. I further adapted the ECX shocks by fitting Traxxas 2668 spring cups (a slightly better fit-- this model ships with the pre-load spacers). I also installed x-rings (Kyosho brand, Associated and TLR also produce double-lipped/grooved o-rings) that make a better seal than standard o-rings.

Check local hobby shops for old stock. I had pretty good luck with this. Also look on Ebay.

2.75" length fit best on the rear and the 2.5 do well on the front. IIRC they're a little shorter than ECX springs but you can just run the adjusting collar down a bit.

Wow, thanks for the detailed reply explaining everything. I have the ECX alu shocks in the back and will follow your advice on the different compatible parts. Thanks.

Just to add to @i_r_beej 's awesome post. Ebay is where I found the red and blue ECX springs, I will say, the blues are harder to find.
Well at least they were in my short quick scan for them.
