Fun fact: Traxxas TRA6773 fit the AMP and are actually a pretty good step up from the stockers. Who knew?! The only reason I picked these were because my LHS has a sale on returned/opened stock and I got them for $10/ea. Maybe related:I stripped out my stock plastic spur gear today during the bash sesh today so it’s time to start playing with gearing!

Any recommendations on a metal spur gear, what tooth size and what pinion?

thanks in advance!

My setup:
AMP MT
Hobbywing EZRun Max 10 ESC
Hobbywing 4000kv brushless motor
ECX metal transmission gear upgrade
ECX Aluminum front/rear shock towers
RPM front/rear arms
RPM Servo Saver Eliminator
RPM Caster Blocks
RPM Spindles
Aluminum captured 12mm hex upgrade
Traxxas 6852X driveshaft upgrade mod
Traxxas 3637 front axle upgrade mod
Turnbuckle mod

Hot Racing has steel spurs SECT881 SECT883 SECT885 and SECT887 (stock 87t).

You could convert to 32p gears using ARRMA AR310405 and ARRMA ARA310584 slipper pads just need to drill the center hole for the spur gear slightly bigger.

I’m probably going to go wit the Hot Racing gear. I’m just now researching gearing. What should I do for pinion gear?

Keep stock brushed pinion and run it. Not happy gear up a couple of teeth if the motor and esc stay cool still not happy gear up a couple teeth more 48p pinions are cheap. I and others could tell you this or that pinion but ultimately it's up to what your happy with how it performs, the environment you run in within the limits of your motor and esc (not getting too hot).

Also if you get a steel spur look at getting quality steel pinions. Steel spurs can eat up poor quality pinions.

NoobNPain, you don't want to use the stock pinion with a Hot Racing hard steel spur. The stock pinion is mild steel (soft) and the hard steel spur will eat it up. When you get your hard steel spur get a hard steel pinion at the same time.

Yeah, I picked up a Robinson racing hardened pinion for it, but then I shredded my steel gear set (not related) ?

You mean the trans gears? Yeah, you should go with steel trans gears, they do t have to be hardened. They run about 28 dollars from ECX.

Yes. They were the trans gears. It’s a set of three, the diff, idler and top shaft gear. I had the metal set and I still shattered the top shaft gear.

I'm surprised you blew out the trans gears if they were all metal. Were they the all metal ECX trans gears?

NoobNPain, this is my Amp, totally upgraded and powered with a GenAce 7000 mAh 60C LiPo. I don't baby this truck and its been clocked at 60 plus mph. I haven't broke or striped any gears, so I'm curious why you would of striped out your trans gears.

No, Upgraded traxxas driveshafts. Dropped down to a 16t pinion, ran it for 20 mins and then it started clicking and grinding, went inside and discovered metal chunks And throne of the gears in the transmission we’re broke. I don’t have an answer, except that in order to run the smaller pinion I had to take a little plastic away from the transmission case and that weakened the case and allowed too much torque and allowed the gears in the transmission gears to slip just enough.

No i dont think that's the problem, i did the same to my Amp, i took about a 3/16th off my adjusting slot and have never had a trans problem. Im wondering if you might have some type of binding going on in the tyranny case. Maybe you lost one of the gear shims. When you put the new steel gears in and put the case back together, before you mount it back in the car make sure it spins freely with no binding or grinding. Also i would recommend that you put some lithium grease on the exposed gears, I do this on all my RC tyranny gearing and have yet had problem. Those gears get hot from the transfer of heat from the slipper clutch along with the friction of the gears themselves. Hope this helps, give it a try can't hurt anything.

Thanks! I use marine grease on my stuff. I’ll double check to see about the shims. Ran fine for a couple weeks back when I installed the gears. It just recently shredded it when I put bigger wheels/tires on. Half the fun of this hobby is tinkering, rebuilding and tuning anyway, right? Haha

weave , what spur and pinion numbers are you running?
