I’m new to the forum and the hobby, I recently picked up a torment 2wd and it started out with the 20t brushed motor and a 7.4v Nimh pack, after it died I went to a titan 550 12T motor and a humpback 8.6v Pack.
Soon after I bought a tazer 3300kv motor and brushless esc combined with a 2s smart lipo battery. All that died in a couple months.
Then, I swapped in a 6s BLX motor, a BLX185 speed control and upgraded the transmission with metal gears, made a custom gearing setup (custom 55t wide pinion gear on a wide 60t spur gear). made a custom axles, a transmission stiffener because the weight and torque of the 6s motor would bend the plastic motor plate on the transmission. Eventually I melted the transmission case itself from all the heat of doing high speed runs over 100mph. Burned out a couple differentials too.
next I modified a metal axial 2 speed transmission to stay in the high range gear as the final drive is better for high speed runsthere is no differential built into these transmission so the durability is much better and it’s locked. I had to make a custom mount as it’s too wide for the torment chassis. The rear bearing carriers melted too so I have metal front steering knuckles from a axial crawler with bigger bearings mounted on the back of my torment, just turned 90 degrees. I had to use two sets of the factory upper control arms to accommodate them as well.
now I have two 6s BLX motors and two BLX200 speed controls, with 4 3s batteries for now, I plan on buying 2 6s batteries but the ones I want are $150 each so I will get them next payday. The motors are mounted on my custom dual motor plate. Last Thing is my pinion gears. I’m running the same size spur and pinion gears now. All of them are mod 1 and 29 teeth Integy gears for the 1/8 Kraton.
I know this sounds crazy, but my goal is to reach 200 kmh.
right now I’m making a flat bottom out 5mm aluminum as aerodynamics and tires are a problem. The factory torment tires blew apart at 90kmh, the proline street fighters made it too 125 and separated ( the foam inside the wheel rips and the rubber tire comes off the rims because they expand so much ), from that point I was able to tape the inside of the wheel with gorilla tape to reinforce it and glue the foam back together and then I reglued everything, still the tires expand and the glue breaks loose around 100mph . Next I see they have belted street fighters I’m going to run when they are no longer back ordered I will order some.
The first time I had a blowout the control arms broke at the hinge pin by the motor. So now there is a reinforcement plate that helps, everything custom made has been made using 3mm and 5mm aluminum sheet, my drill, and cut off wheels / grinding tools.
my custom axles are made from hex drive bits, 1/4” sockets, axial wraith driveshafts (on transmission end) and front axles (at the wheel end), and they use the metal wraith steering knuckles with the oversized bearings. Obviously they have to extend and compress a little for the suspension so I used the hex drive bits and 1/4” sockets for that reason and welded them to each end. Added a little heat shrink for aesthetics. So far they have been great.
