Metal or plastic spur gears?

I'm soon upgrading my 1/10 ruckus from 7 cell nimh to 2s LiPo.
I want to gain a little top end speed
considering switching from 87 to 85t spur gear
currently have 24t (metal) pinion gear
is plastic or metal better for spur gears?

I've had no issue running plastic spur gears with brushless motors. What matters the most is your gear mesh, get it set right and either will work just fine.

I strongly believe in leaving easy to repair weak point when hopping up a machine. They always break if you push them hard enough and a plast spur is easily accessible when they do break. I'd rather pop the spur cover off and switch a spur than remove the whole transmission. Trust me, I've smoked a bunch of spur gears before I got it right

I agree. Also having a metal spur gear makes the pinion a target for weakness and wear over time. I would recommend plastic

I race my Circuit (13.5t brushless) with a plastic 78t Associate spur and plastic 175rc pinion. No worries. @WoodiE is correct: proper mesh is key.
