Recommend a new car/truck/whatever?

So I'll be receiving a profit share payout in a couple of weeks and I plan to skim a couple of hundred off and buy a new car. I've been thinking about maybe a Torment. I already have an AMP and a Boost, and I have a TLR 22 3.0 so I'm not so sure I want another 2WD car. What about a 4WD Torment or Circuit? A rock crawler or racer? Whatever it is I need to keep it under $300. Ish. Around there. :)

Thanks for sharing any experiences or suggestions.
 
Dhk Hunter. I beat the crap out of mine and have yet to break apart. I opted for the brushed version because I had a spare brushless kit laying around. It's a really Solid 4 x 4 platform. Everyone loves it for its low center of gravity and awesome suspension. The drivetrain is also much easier to work on than the 4 X 4 ECX vehicles.
 
I vote for a crawler. It's a lot more fun than I thought it would be (bought an axial scx10 g6 for my kid).

That's also a good idea. I have the Wraith Spawn and while slow, it's really fun. Crawls over everything! You can pick up the SCX10 Deadbolt for $299. Beware, they are tough, but easy to drop $$$ upgrading... lol. IMAG1559.webp
 
Axial has a nice product, but they are money pits. Right of the bat you are going to want aluminum chubs, universals or CVD, aluminum or Ti links and steering linkage. Your up to $450 - $500

I have had (2) Wraiths, (3) SCX10, and currently have (2) AX10 and a XR10.

If you keep the speed/gearing down, I don't see why only upgrading the steering linkage and suspension linkage would suffice. Oh, and servo/horn. My Boom racing linkage is holding so far. But it also wasn't cheap. I think I'm $100+ into it so far.

But like ALL RCs, parts break and you upgrade those parts as needed. It's inevitable.
 
Im currently saving to get the axial rr10 bomber kit. Ill probably just throw in a brushed motor and esc for now until i can afford to buy a new BL combo. Plan to get at the start of december in time for my 3 weeks leave. Cant wait!
 
If you want something just for fun. Something very fast and bashable.....Savage XS. Any desire for an on-road car?
 
Thanks for the recommendations. I've been doing some looking and the Vaterra Twin Hammers is a car that caught my attention. The ability to go fast AND do some crawling is appealing.

@x a road car did not occur to me. Since we live in an unincorporated area and the "main" roads in our neighborhood are rarely maintained and the side roads are gravel, a rally car might be cool.

I looked at the Twin Hammer as well. I read some disparaging stuff about durability...

There is also a massive aftermarket support for the Axial vehicles. But the Twin Hammer was what got me looking into the crawlers/racers in the first place.

On my lunch break yesterday, I found myself hiking a local park and brought my crawler along with me. It was fun...

Several good rally cars out there. Here is a review done for some of the more popular ones. They may be a little over your budget though if $300 is the limit. The HPI comes in both electric and nitro flavors.

If you can deal with a something a little smaller though, depending on how rough the terrain is, I can recommend the losi micro rally. I have the micro SCTE and they are mostly the same. Extremely fun little car.

@X I was looking at micro cars about a month ago: the 1/24 Torment, in particular. The Losi rally car looks good too. I also like the relative "portability" of the 1/24 scale cars. Hmm. Decisions, decisions. :)
 
I've got a Losi Micro Rally and it can be made stupid fast. It can also take a beating like you wouldn't think it could. YouTube some videos on the Losi. I've got a Chinese knock off of the THammers, an FEIYUE FY03. It's OK for what it is at 1/12 scale. There's also a 1/10 knockoff called the Wild Truck, I think. It can use Vaterra parts.

Then there's Axial's Yeti, Bomber, or Wraith that have some speed and some crawling ability.
 
The biggest disadvantages to the smaller size is the smaller size. Lack of outdoor play mainly. A groomed children's playground or parking lot is good. Backyard mowed grass is too much. The Losi 1/24 seems to be a more reliable rig than the ECX, from all that I've read. Sorry, ECX. But it also costs more. I've built a few using cheap Chinese ESCs and a normal Spectrum receiver with a jacked up servo to make it fit. And they have been reliable so far. The brushless Spectrum ESC/Rx combo is the best bang for the buck. I have one and use a brushless heli motor that 6950kV and it's loads of fun.
 
Thanks for the perspective, @Brake Weight . I've made a couple of trips and taken along my cars and... it feels like going on an expedition. When I pare things down to a single bag with just batteries, chargers, one parts box, small zipper case of tools, and the AMP and Boost, it feels like I'm packing for a small expedition. Hence the desire for a smaller car. A micro seemed perfect, but after really considering the small size I think I might just be limiting myself; I only really go traveling with "toys" a couple of times a year and I just couldn't bear to leave an awesome RC car undriven.

So... decisions, decisions.
 
I've got a Losi Trail Trekker I'll pack along on family trips and vacations. Most all hotels, condos, etc have some nice rock laden flower beds or at least something to crawl around in. I can fit it and the remote into a small kid's shoe box.

If you're likely to do something like this the Losi Micro Rallys may not be out of the question. Something to zip around the parking lot and sidewalks with and ramping the handicap access curb. Been there and done that, too. I use a simple 2s charger for small helis/drones from eFlite. If the battery is under 400mAh, IIRC, it'll balance charge using the balance plug. Green/red LED makes it even easier.

But if you're going hiking or something real outdoorsy then you'd want to pack a 1/10 along. Or a 1/18 4x4 something.

I've got a Redcat Racing Sumo stadium truck. It's a 1/24 also and is AWD similar to the Losi. It's a lot cheaper and uses AA batteries. Surprisingly there's support for hop ups. I've got metal CVDs, metal diffs(from an HBX), a heat sink on the motor, and rewired it for 2s power using four 14500 3.7v batteries. It's taken some beating, but not as much as the Micro Cooper.
