My 9 year old sons 1/18 ECX Ruckus has a bad ESC after following horizons recommendation to apply voltage to motor to check if it is good and checking esc to see if it was any good. ESC is bad and looking for replacement. Looking at stock replacement but figured since it needs to be replaced might as well upgrade it and possibly motor too. I saw the upgrades page but not sure which one would work and would I have to get a new remote as well? Not looking for super high end or expensive upgrade. We just got a bunch of Nimh batteries and better charger which sucks now the ESC is burned out as LIPO would be better but don't want to spend more but maybe the option of LIPO in the future would be good as his new charger will charge both. Any help or specific product recommendations would be great. Thanks.

Current stock motor is brushed motor but not opposed to going brushless with a ESC/Motor combo.

Stock esc is a esc/receiver combo unit. There might be a receiver compatible with the stock transmitter I don't know. To replace it with something else means getting another transmitter receiver combo and another separate esc.

Links are for general reference don't know where your located

Esc https://www.ebay.com/itm/Electronic...SC-Built-in-BEC-for-RC-Car-RC827/312429033598
Adapter EC3 to Tamiya (if you don't want to solder on a new connector) https://www.ebay.com/itm/No-Wires-C...miya-Female-Lipo-Battery-Adapter/231024711173
Tx/rx combo https://www.ebay.com/itm/GoolRC-TG3...1:g:gcMAAOSwEBRbj7Cd:rk:5:pf:1&frcectupt=true
(can be sourced cheaper from China)

To go brushless is a greater expense even the cheap (OCday, Goolrc etc.) combos need to have the program card included to change the default setting of lipo cutoff to get max life out of a nimh battery.

I'm in the USA but not opposed to sourcing from China. This combo is around $51 plus shipping for the various items. Would all this work? I plan to keep car and upgrade as we go aka break stuff. Going to be my learning car and will probably get a car for myself eventually.

Is there a way to use this one with Nimh:

All that will work and that brushless combo was one I was going to suggest going brushless. What I had listed was for staying brushed and trying to stay within your earlier posted budget. Get the components from wherever you want I just prefer to find US source even if I pay a little more (I am little impatient). Grab all that some 2.5mm bolts to the mount the motor and a .5 mod 14t (2mm bore) pinion and you should set.

The diffs in these are not really that strong but that 2430 5800kv motor should work well with a 14t pinion.

Thanks for the help, I had more browser windows open looking for this stuff in various sources and not sure what works. Guess that part of the adventure. I like usa parts for speed too but it's snowy where I live so not in a super rush at this point. If you have links for local ebay/Amazon or other I'm willing to pay a little more.

Link for the .5 mod 14t(2mm bore) pinion?

Ebay links can come and go but it's usually where I shop there good deals from people who ship from US but deals/listings don't last to long sometimes. So every now and then I check Ebay for things from a US seller. Amazon is great if your a Prime member but things can sometimes cost more with that convenience of Prime shipping.

Heres a $10 motor on Ebay US seller https://www.ebay.com/itm/Tacon-2040...538?epid=852155029&hash=item33ca365182:g:pZIA

35a esc 2435 4800 combo https://www.ebay.com/itm/OCDAY-B243...d:g:ST4AAOSwYwxcSDb-:rk:2:pf:1&frcectupt=true

I like the Tacons and the Ocday, Goolrc etc. esc's but don't know about the small scale Ocday motors (seem a little too cheap).

The 2435 motor is stronger than a 2430 5800kv but could run fine on nimh (I run lipo) might not be as hard on the diffs. The 2430 5800kv I run In a 1/18 Latrax SST with plastic diffs that's why I recommend it. Some have luck with the stock plastic diffs but other have had problems stripping diffs. Get a stronger motor loosen up the slipper some might not ever have a problem I just err on the side of caution vs taking the risk of stripping a diff (I already had stripped one).

I edited my above post you can look at the links now.

Yep I tend to stick with Ebay for most things but have ordered from Aliexpress (Us shipping sometimes).

Pretty much all the cards that look like the one I linked above will work (Ocday, Goolrc, etc.)

I would ask horizon hobby to replace them I had issues my truck esc and they replaced for free. Mention you did what they suggested and you still have no luck

I did ask for replacement from Horizon but they want a receipt which I don't have at this point so I figured time to upgrade.

Do I need to soder when putting in a new motor?
Yes? maybe No? Depends on what brand you buy and what grade you buy. A budget friendly Onyx system, no, it's pretty much plug and play, the more expensive ones, yes, but they do come with the wires, I think. All the ones that I have purchased have the wires solder on, you just need to plug the leads into the ESC. And plug the ESC into the receiver.

what do you think is a good esc upgrade for an ecx torment
Depends, what's your budget and what do you want from the upgrade.....speed, torque, both..... Massive wheelies?.....LOL Do you plan on upgrading the battery as well? What battery are you running now?

So many questions.
