Motor/speed

brushless is the way to go. Thing is still amazing at slow speed, just creeps forwards yet if you need that 'kick' to rock over a big log it does it. The down side? You will need to switch to a separate esc and receiver, the upside? If you are doing that then take the time and an extra $20-30 to go and fit an extra servo and 4 wheel steering! This is a very easy conversion. No more than an hours work. I video'd it step by step if you need to know what to do. They you also get lipo advantage by going brushless, plus no cogging making slow crawling even better

Just out of curiosity why would you run it in water first?

Also I wish I knew what turn the factory motor and Tazer 280 are.

Putting it in water to break it in prevents arcing between the brushes and the commutator because there is no air. Arcing is bad for the com so this is a safer way to break it in. At least that's my understanding.
