Pinion gear confusion

I'm new to this so be gentle. What is the difference in the amount of teeth in a pinion gear? What number teeth would be a good choice if I'm changing to a metal 87 gear? Thanks in advance Vern

The stock plastic is an 87t so if you're changing to a 87t metal, the stock pinion should be fine. A smaller pinion and/or larger spur gear will give you more torque/acceleration. A larger pinion and/or smaller spur gear will give you more top speed. Raising gear ratio drastically will cause your motor/esc to overheat and can reduce run times. Lower gearing equals less heat and longer run times. Changing the pinion up or down in teeth will have a greater effect while changing a spur gear will be more subtle. If your looking for huge results change both. Motor turn/KV and tire size also play a role

When you say smaller, is that more teeth or less teeth?
