Premature LVC

Hello, I have a 2wd Torment with a 15T brushed motor running 2s lipos. I only get 5-10 minutes of run time on a 5200mah 50c 2s lipo. The ESC is set for Lipos and I performed the ESC to Transmitter calibration. I have the STX 3 transmitter. The battery is at 3.9v per cell when the truck hits the Lvc and has about 50% power. The motor is new and is the exact stock replacement. Also have stock gearing. I can use the same battery in my Arrma big rock for another 10-15 minutes after it cuts off in my Torment. Also, I sometimes get a lag in response from the controller to the truck and controller has new batteries. Any ideas?

Jamkx, is that the stock Esc? I would venture to say you have a bad ESC. Now, before you go and buy another, what do you have the low voltage cut-off set set for, or can you even set that on that ESC?

Just trying to decide if it is worth it to upgrade to brushless or just buy a different truck. I would also need to upgrade the tranny gears to metal. It already has the metal spur gear and metal driveshafts. Anyone use the race star 3650 brushless motor and ESC from Banggood?

I would definitely go to a brushless combo. Hobbywing Easy Run would be a good choice. If you plan on staying in the hobby, yes it would be wise to upgrade your Torment. I have two that are upgraded and love them. I also have Traxxas, Arma's DHK's and Axial all great trucks and all upgraded.
I'm in the process of making a new bumper for my friends ECX Amp. He had a extended front bumper and while testing the truck it bashed into my sons rear tire at 50 mph. Below is the out come. The bumper did its job but it needs to have a little more give.
Happy RC'ing.

Nice! What set up is in the AMP. I’m definitely staying in the sport. The Torment is for my 7 year old son. I bought it for myself but I just upgraded to a Arrma Big Rock, awesome truck. I want to have my son run with me but the Torment is giving problems. It’s partially upgraded with metal driveshafts and metal spur gear. I also converted it to a Ruckus body and monster truck wheels looks awesome now. Still have the Torment body and wheels.

My Amp is upgraded with a Castle Combo brushless 4600 series, allaluminum suspension, Traxxas adjustable links, Hot Racing servo saver, big bore shocks, high velocity 5 volt fans, night running lights, 2.86 x4.87 Thrasher tires, Gen Ace 3S 7000 mAh battery and wheel hub extensions. The fans and lights run on their own separate batteries, 7.4 volt for the fans and 3.7 volt for the lights.

Thanks Jamkx, its a lot of fun. I have to admit I have the tooling to to make it easy to make these parts and upgrades. I just finished a friend's Amp yesterday and he's very happy with it. This is his Amp

Awesome. I’m just trying to get this Torment to work properly with out spending a lot of money on it since I am giving it to my son. I want to run this by you.

I have a different motor and ESC that I installed. It’s a 12T Arrma 550 brushed motor and Arrma 12T 2s Lipo brushed ESC. After I run it a few minutes, the motor stops. Steering works and ESC light flashes. If I turn off ESC and back on again it works for a few more minutes. I tried to rebind the receiver but still does it. Very frustrating because the other stock ESC either gets hot or cuts off too early. This is a whole different set up - motor and ESC. I don’t know why I still have issues. Could the radio or steering servo somehow be causing the problem? I am using the STX 3 Spectrum radio. I don’t mind upgrading, but don’t want to keep having issues.

That’s awesome. Looks great! For a brushless do you think an F540 4370 kv will work well? We mostly drive on the street but also take it to the bmx track. Or would a 3650 or 3660 with 3100 to 3500 kv work better?

The F450 is a very cheap setup. It depends on what you want to do. The higher the kv, the lower the torque and more speed.
Brushless motors use a standard numbering scheme to describe their physical size and kV rating. For example: let's assume we have a 5055-3000kV Brushless Outrunner Motor. We break the numbers out as follows: [50] [55] - [3000]
  • [50] The first two numbers represent the diameter of the motor's housing in millimeters; in this example 50mm
  • [55] The second two numbers represent the length of the motor housing in millimeters; in this example 55mm
  • [3000] The numbers after the dash represent the kV rating of the motor; in this example 3000kV. The kV rating (not to be confused with kilo-volt) is the RPM of the motor (k) per volt (V) with no load. For example, a brushless motor with a kV rating of 3000 powered by a 12V power source would be capable of 36,000 RPMs (multiply 3000x12). This is the max RPMs that this motor can reach under no load. A motor with a higher kV will have more top end speed, but not as much acceleration/torque. A motor with a lower kV will not be as fast, but will have more torque.

Hi, thanks for the information, it is very helpful. Looks like you are in San Jose, I’m in Livermore. Practically neighbors, lol.

I want to give the truck to my son since I now have a Big Rock. Another combo I looked at was the Onyx brushless. They have a 3000kv and 4000kv motor with a 70amp ESC. I want to be able to run 3s and 2s (for when my son drives it). I also want to run it on the street but also in the grass and off-road. I would like more top speed than the brushed set up, but want to have enough torque to drive off-road. Do you think the onyx system is good quality?

Do you think the 3000 or 4000 kv would be better. Hard to know unless I see it in action. I also have monster truck tires on the truck.

link below is for the 3000kv motor and ESC combo

Thanks!

The 4000kv will give you the speed and with the big tires you should have plenty of torque. Caution, when you run in the grass you put more stress ( heat ) on the motor. If you plan on running in grass a lot, i would install a high velocity 5 volt .045 or .060 amp fan on or over the motor to keep it cool. My motors run beteen 110 and 130 F` when in use with high velocity fans over the motors. If you are good at wiring or know somewhat about electronics/electricity, you can wire the fan to run on its own 7.4 drone battery and add a micro switch to turn it on or off.
If you don't have a used electronic store in your area, you can order these parts online.

Hi I bought a 4300 kv 3650 motor ESC with programming card for $32 on EBay. It’s super fast on 3s and I need a wheelie bar. Any suggestions for a wheelie bar? I saw traxxas has one but I am not sure if it will work on the torment.

Jamkx, you can use a Traxxas or a DHK wheelie bar for your Torment. You will have to buy some 1/4 OD x 1/8th long x .150 bore (hole). If you don't want to go through all that work, you can use zip ties and attached the wheelie bar to the bumper.

Awesome thanks for the info and the pics are very helpful. I just ordered the Traxxas wheelie bar. Where did you get those spacers? What are they? Did you buy them that size or did you cut them to length? Also I see you are running a cooling fan on the motor. I want to get a heat sink and fan but not sure how to fit it. There is not much space on my Torment for it to fit. How did you attach yours?

I brought the spacers at a surplus store, how every you can get them online, you just have search for them. There also known as stand- offs. The fan/ fans are high velocity fans, 7.4 volts .050 amps and run on their own separate 7.4 volt .850 mAh Drone battery. You can run off your transmitter if you want but you will be using the main battery power. That might be easier for you. You will have to wire the fan with the correct connector. Using an auxiliary battery you will have to install a micro toggle switch.
