Rc goes into kind of “limp mode”

So, I recently bought my young sister a ecx Torment 2wd. It’s a great beginner vehicle for her only thing I noticed is after a few minutes of run time the power significantly drops off, almost like a limp mode. It is a lipo battery, and it is all the way charged so not low battery. I think possibly motor overheating but how would she avoid this without re gearing, it is the stock gearing. Any help is appreciated, Thanks, Joe_Mama

does the esc have a lipo setting? what size lipo are you running? if the esc has a lipo setting it sounds like its going into the lvc( low voltage cutoff)

It is on the lipo setting as that is the battery I’m using however putting it on the charger doesn’t confirm low voltage so idk, maybe the low voltage kicks on after like 5 min of run time at a unusually high voltage

what charger to you have? is it a balance charger for lipo batteries? what is it telling you the voltage is at when you put it on the charger? when you plug the battery in it should show you a voltage of 7.4 when its fully charged it should be close to 9volts.

i have a lectron pro ACDC-10A, it is a balance charger, the voltage seems correct, shows 8.4V when fully charged and battery was close to that when I checked after the car did the thing.

she has been driving it more and more, and it seems to maybe have broken in some, it now only slows down after 10-15 minutes but this could also be because I told her to keep it on 75%, the manual said to only use 100% for top speed runs, makes me think could have been overheating.

10-15 mins sounds like the end of the battery run time or you have something binding up causing resistance in the drive train and it's overheating stuff.

Contact Horizon asap if this is a recent purchase and you keep having problems. My 2wd ruckus that I purchased 2 weeks ago came with a dead esc - I contacted Horizon and no questions they sent me a new esc free of charge. Just explain to them what is happening - they will ask for a picture of the receipt and of the item that is defective. I didn't care too much because I went brushless right away but, when I did test the esc that came with it, it would actually stop after 1 minute of driving and just blink red. It did this no matter which battery I used. Hope your issue gets resolved, I can see how that would be frustrating.

Joe, what size LiPo do you have? I'm assuming it's a 2S LiPo, what is the mAh of the battery? It's possible the battery has a low cell or bad cell. You should be able to check the individual voltage of each cell with that charger. If one cell is lower than the other by more than 10%, your run time will be diminished and the low voltage cut-off will kick in sooner. When the battery is charging push the plus button to see the voltages of both of the cells. So, let's say one cell is 4.2 and the other cell is 3.8, that's a 10% difference. You are still at 8 volts for a 7.4-volt system. You can keep reducing the voltage down to 3.4 and still have a 7.6-volt system. So the point is, the run times are going to be less as one low cell depletes faster than the good one which, will activate the LVC sooner. Might not be your problem, but something to think about and check out.
Happy RC'ing.
