What pinions do you have? I think you get 2 with the torment 4x4?
3800KV is quite a hot motor compared to stock. I'd try the smallest pinion first and see what that does to the ESC. Do you have a temp gun? If not, dealextreme sells a good one for not a lot of money. This is the one I got:
