AMP MT Battery Help

I just got the AMP MT (my first car)and I want to get a second battery. I can not find any info on what battery I can upgrade too. Can it handle a 7 cell 8.4v battery? What about a LiPo? Or am i stuck with 6 cell 7.2v batteries?

I wouldn't increase the voltage with a NiMH battery and only go to a 2S Lipo. If you go lipo you will need to get a lipo charger. Personally I would go lipo if you can afford it.

I purchased xtra batts, 3000mah nimhs Gens by 2. Noticed alittle xtra run time (only just), hav now gone 5000mah 2s with a Goolrc brushless combo (cheap i know), but run time has gone frm 15-20min to 45-60min pending how and where i bash and the xtra speed is sooo much more fun?
In saying that, metal gear + a T-bone racing bumper. That's all ive done so far with future upgrades to be done...

I do plan to go to brushless but not for a bit. I want to learn a lot more before I start buying and replacing parts.

For now I just wanted to make sure a higher volt will not hurt anything.

Second vote for a 2S lipo. You're going to need it when you go Brushless anyway. ?

Witiko6, you can go 2S LiPo 7.4 5000 mAh to 7000 mAh with the stock brushed motor except you will have to change ESC (electronic speed control). If you go to a 3S you will have to raise the rear battery compartment as the battery wont fit under the platform. Depending on what version Amp you have, the older Amps, the rear battery compartment is part of the rear/shock suspension (which is what I have) and requires some ingenuity to raise. The new models have a redesigned battery platform which is no longer part of the rear suspension.

My two sons got MT's for Christmas a few weeks ago, and I bought 2-cell Lipo batteries (7.4V) for them at the time. Those batteries gave a HUGE boost in both torque and top-end speed over the stock NiMH batteries. However, that torque resulted in a stripped plastic gear in the differential in one almost immediately. Thus, I found myself buying all-metal differential kits and spur gear kits. (About $40 per car right there.) I also found that the stock steering servos were weak (torque) when making high-speed turns, so I upgraded them to HiTec 645MG servos (another $30 per car). (Bought them from one of the big-name RC stores online.) But one of the servos was bad out of the package and had to return it.) Put a slightly-higher-torque servo in that car (higher than the 645MG), and that seems to work well ($50 for that servo). When replacing the servos, I ended up also replacing the stock plastic arms connecting the servos to the steering linkage with metal arms (the plastic arms were starting to strip.) So far, so good. But I've now put over $100 per car in repairs and upgrades, and we've had them less than a month and just drive them in the backyard. I don't know if this is expected/typical, but I wish the good folks at the Horizon Hobby store had told me that the "really good brand name" ready-to-drive MT's were going to actually cost me $250 each instead of the original $140.

Welcome to the world of RC'ing. That's exactly why I stopped buying RTR and now only buy KIT RC's. The RC companies put the cheapest parts (servo, esc, motor, bushings instead of bearings) as they can to keep the cost down. IF you want quality stuff you are going to have to pay for it. Personally, I like to buy a roller/slider and put the parts I want in it. It's all a learning curve, some times that curve is steep. My beef with the RC world is how they size there RC's. A 1/10 in one brand is a 1/8 in another brand. There is no continuity in sizing RC's. All 1/10's should be this size, all 1/8's should be this size, ect, ect.

Barrett, welcome to the world of RC'ing. The Amp is a low level beginner MT truck $ 139 to 149 but a great truck to upgrade. I'm a retired machinist and wanted a hobby and chose the RC world. My first vehicle was the MT Amp and i paid $149 for it. If i were to sell it today i could get $350 to $375 for it what with all the upgrades i have made on the truck. At this time i have 28 RC vehicles and the Amp help me make that decision. The parts for rc vehicles are relatively cheap. The most expensive parts i would say is your brushless motors, ESC's and 3S batteries. All the upgrades you've done so far are the right ones. There is a lot more you can do to upgrade if you wish and you are mechanically able to do so which it sounds like you are. You can upgrade the the motor to brushless cmbo, 3S battery, rear axles, ect. Upgreading to a 3S battery will require you to raise the rear battery compartment as a 3S battery will not fit under the platform. There is also many things you can do to the body also to keep damage to a minimum, which some manufactures are offering on pricier models. Good luck, have fun and make it better.
