Electronic problems

Hi All

I have been having electrical issue with my Ruckus. With the stock 15T brushed motor and stock 60a ESC, I get very short run times using a 2s 5200mah 50c lipo. I get 5-8 minutes and the ESC got so hot it melted the solder connection loose at the EC3 connector. I swapped out to an Arrma 12T brushed and Arrma Brushed ESC (same set up as a brushed Granite), but I still have issues. It runs fine but after about 8 minutes the throttle shuts down and the ESC flashes red, but the steering works. If I turn the ESC on and off it will run for another minute and shut off again. I have no binding, everything rolls freely and I just cleaned the motor. I am running stock gearing 19t pinion and 87t spur and the truck is 2wd.

Any ideas? I want to go brushless but don’t want to keep encountering problems. Could the steering servo cause issues with the throttle cutting off?

I see you say no binding, but truly, that's what it feels like to me since you've removed the electronics from the possible issue (as you replaced them). Have you verified the connections on your battery? Overheating leads are usually due to overcurrent draw, or intermittent connections. Have you monitored the motor/ ESC temperatures? Are you certain your pinion/ spur gear mesh is set properly and not too tight? Maybe post some pictures to help us help you troubleshoot.

Hi, I am attaching some photos. I set the gear mesh using the paper method and I have the metal spur gear and metal driveshafts. I don’t have a temperature sensor to measure the temps. I can move the rear wheels easily with my hand. Thanks!

How is your slipper set?

If you rock your spur gear by hand do you get a little click sound? Check your mesh by feel. Turn the spur gear and check your mesh all around the spur, not just in one spot. Set your mesh at the tightest spot, not the loosest.

If you disengage you’re pinion and turn the spur by hand with the wheels off the ground, does it turn freely? Set it on the ground with the pinion disengaged and roll it forward- listen for noise and see how freely it rolls. Something isn’t right.

What are the per-cell voltages on your LiPo? What are you charging it with?

Hi,

I can rock the slipper by hand and it has a small click. I wanted to post videos here but I don’t think I can.

The lipo batteries are at 4.2v per cell when I start out and they are balanced. I can use the same battery in my Arrma Granite for 25 minutes with no issues. I have a T240 duo charger with LCD display. It rolls freely now down the slight grade of my driveway with everything connected but power off.

I dont know what else to check.

thanks for your help

I just put my short course tires on there to see if it was an issue with the monster truck tires but did same thing. After 8 minutes throttle cuts out and ESC flashes red. Slipper and mesh are correct. Rear wheels move freely.
Could it be the radio or servo? All wires have good connections.

Shouldn't be the RX or servo. Are you running stock?

Could you take some more photos? Perhaps of the spur/pinion without the cover on, driveshafts, etc.

You can, though you have to use a third party host site.

yes stock servo and STX 3 rx. I have hot racing driveshafts and spur gear.

Hard to get a good look, but perhaps your slipper is looser than it should be. How are you setting it? Have you put your finger on the motor or esc when it shuts off to see if they are too hot?

Hi I checked the slipper and it was loose. I tightened it up and then a few minutes later it got so loose again that it slips even when fully tightened. I will order a new slipper clutch and see how it works then. So, if it’s too loose, does that mean the engine could be spinning more than it should, then causing the Engine to shut down from getting too hot?

How is the slipper pad? If it isn't too worn you could take some sandpaper to it to rough it back up so it grips. You likely just need a new nylon locknut. Or you can throw some blue threadlocker on the threads.

And yes, if it was slipping alot it can cause the motor/ ESC to run rather hot trying to get the truck moving.

Thanks. I soon realized that the plastic gear inside the transmission is worn. The teeth are fine, but the inside of the gear that is connected to the slipper tore out where the slipper shaft pin is. I ordered a metal gear set and will try again.

Hi X,

Thanks for the help. I bought a new slipper clutch and since the trans gear stripped, I changed over to all metal gears. I also tried a new battery and now the truck is working great. I am getting about 25 minutes run time on my new 2s Lipo. Not sure why the old batteries did not work will in this truck. The old battery lasts about 25 minutes in my Big Rock, but only about 8 minutes in the brushed Torment.
