The diff has a ring gear all the way around it, i don't see how changing the thickness of oil in it is robbing power. The only thing it can do is split it differently.
Topher, that's why people who do speed runs, run a spool/locked diff. If making it stiff was a problem they wouldn't do it.
You aren't confusing the gearbox/transmission with the diff are you? The diff is just one part of the gearbox
