Are both of your motors the smooth can type, or do they have the "fins" going around it? The smooth cans are true 540 motors, the ribbed ones have 380 stator's in a 540 can. The ribbed ones won't have the same torque as the smooth ones, even if they are both the same KV #.
I finally got my 3900kv 60amp goolrc combo yesterday. It's a 540 motor. The red kit with the card. Got it in my circuit with stock gearing and larger tires (about 5/8" taller) ran 2 8.4v 5000mah batteries back to back, really beating on it, trying to see what would heat up. Motor was slightly warm, esc cold, and the batteries got hot. Haven't tried 3s yet, but I will soon. Will have to gear it down for 3s, almost too fast with the 8.4 nimh. I might have to buy 2s batteries, some say they can' handle 3s. Reading the specs closely, the motor can pull 69 amps continuously, while the esc can only hold 60 continuously, so maybe that's why they fry?
